The original text of "Qing Yu Case Yuan Xiao":
1. The east wind scatters the flowers of a thousand trees at night.
2. It blows away stars, like a rain of falling stars.
3. luxurious carriages, fragrant with the essence of the times, fill the road.
4. The sound of the phoenix flute resonates, the jade pot shines, and the night is filled with the dance of fish and dragons.
5. The ladies, with their brows like snow-covered willows and their gold threads, compete in beauty.
6. Their laughter and beauty fill the air as they pass by, leaving an indelible fragrance.
7. In the crowd, I search for him a thousand times.
8. Suddenly, looking back, I find that person, in the dim light of the lanterns.
Translation:
1. Like the east wind scattering a thousand trees in full bloom, it also scatters fireworks, falling randomly like rain.
2. Luxurious carriages, drawn by noble horses, fill the streets with a sweet aroma.
3. The sound of the phoenix flute echoes, the bright moon reflects in the jade pot, and the fish and dragons dance all night.
4. Butterflies and willows, charms of gold, are adorned on the ladies' heads as they chat and laugh, their beauty and fragrance subtly dispersing.
5. I search for her in the crowd a thousand times, only to turn around and unexpectedly find her in the dimly lit place where the lanterns are few and far between.
The poet, Xin Qiji (1140-1207), one of the finest Song Dynasty poets, was a general who led a powerful army to some successful campaigns against the northern invaders. However, he was repeatedly held back and dismissed, yet reappointed by his emperor. In the end, he retired, a frustrated warrior yet a very accomplished poet.
