“Ordos”, a Mongolian word meaning “palace complex” in Chinese, was originally the name of the tribe which guarded Genghis Khan’s tomb. In the sixth year of Shunzhi Period of Qing dynasty (AD. 1649), chiefs of different Ordos tribes held a magnificent meeting, Wang’aizhao Meeting, at the location of Dalate Tribe, by which the Yikezhao Meng (Yikezhao meaning Grand Temple in Chinese) was formed, an administrative region that had lasted till the beginning of this century. In 2001 the State Council dissolved the Yikezhao Meng and approved the establishment of Ordos City.

Lying in the southwest of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Ordos faces south toward the ancient Great Wall, neighbors Shanxi Province, Shanxi Province and Ningxia Province, and its three sides are surrounded by the Yellow River. The region between Ordos and Baotou has become the most dynamic “Golden Triangle” in Inner Mongolia. Ordos has hills in its east, wavy plateaus in its west, two deserts, Maowusu and Kuqibu, in its middle, and an alluvial plain sculpted by the Yellow River in its north. The area covered by desert, hills and plateau takes up 48% of the total area of Ordos, which has an average elevation of 1000-1500 meters. The annual average temperature of Ordos is 5.3-8.7 degrees Celsius; its annual precipitation is small and concentrated, around 170-350mm, making a temperate continental climate.

Despite its undulating and complex topography, Ordos enjoys convenient traffic. Three railway lines, Jing-bao (Beijing - Baotou), Bao-lan (Baotou - Lanzhou), Bao-Xi (Baotou – Xi’an), and two highway lines, No. 109 and No. 210, run across the city, the Ordos Airport lying at the suburbs and five other airports in nearby area. The total area of the city is 87 thousand square kilometers, with a total population of 1,548,000, of whom 170,000 are Mongolian. Ordos city is divided into seven Qis and one district (Yijinhuoluo Qi, Dalate Qi, Hangjin Qi, Zhungeer Qi, Wushen Qi, Ertuoke Qi, Ertuokeqian Qi, Dongsheng District). Its main minority ethnic group is Mongolian, while Han people still remain the majority. The Kangbashi New District, where the Municipal Government is located, had been under construction since May 2004, and was put into application on July 31, 2006, which is now center of politics, culture, finance, scientific research and education and hi-tech industry base of Ordos.

Ordos enjoys a long history, and is one of the birthplaces of human civilization. As early as 30,007 years ago, “Hetao People” started to thrive on this vast land and created the phenomenal “Hetao culture”. In the Shang Dynasty 3500 years ago, a significant page in the history of nomadic people was uncovered and a famous culture “Zhukaigou Culture” was developed, which marked the evolution of the nomadic population in the north from a primitive state to a civilized one. Between 2800 BC and 2300 BC, “Ordos Bronze Culture” flourished, represented by bronze wares decorated by a variety of animal patterns. Entering the mid-15th century, the Ordos tribe responsible for guarding the mausoleum of Genghis Khan marched into Ordos from the Mongolian Plateau. The long history and unique location of Ordos has bred a regional culture with primitive simplicity and profound elegance. Ordos is home to beautiful songs with melodious and soft long tunes and fresh and brisk short tunes. What is especially popular is its Manhan Tune widely appreciated in Shanxi, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, with Senjidema being a good example. The Zhungeer Qi in our city is also thus nominated as “Home to the Art of Manhan Tune” by the Ministry of Culture. Ordos is also famous for its dancing art. Such shows as “Chopsticks Dance” and “Cup Bowl Dance” are recognized as national art treasures. In addition, Ordos is the area where the Mongolian traditional rituals are preserved most intact, and the worship ritual for Genghis Khan and Ordos wedding ritual have been included in the national list of intangible cultural heritages. Such epic masterpieces as “Origin and Development of Mongolia” and “The Golden History of Mongolia” with profound cultural and historical significance are also born in Ordos. Ordos also took a special role in recent history of national revolution. The “Duguilong” movement broke out here which kindled the “Ordos Storm”. Nowadays Ordos, with its historical foundation and regional features, is walking toward the whole country and the world.

Ordos is abundant with resources, among which the most well-known are Sheep, Coal, Kaolin and Natural Gas. Aerbasi cashmere, known as “fiber diamond” and “soft gold”, is noted for its long and thin fiber. The annual output of Aerbasi cashmere in Ordos is more than 700,000 kgs, and the annual production capacity of cashmere sweaters exceeds 8,900,000 pieces, which are exported to places all over the world. Ordos has 149.6 billion tons of proven coal reserves, accounting for about one-sixth of the total amount nationwide and half of the entire quantity in Inner Mongolia. Ordos coal enjoys the advantages of low ash, low sulfur, low phosphorus and high heat output, thus was recognized as “clean coal” by Chinese and foreign experts. Till now the coal mines developed include mainly Zhungeer, Dongsheng, Wanlichuan and Xizhuozishan. In 2007 a total 198.5 million tons of coal was produced. Besides coal, Ordos also boasts 6.5 billion tons of Kaolin reserves, whose quality among the best in China. So far a quantity of 878.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas has been proven, amounting to one third of the total reserves in China. The world famous large-sized terrestrial ready gas field Sulige Gas Field is within the Wushen Qi of Ordos, which owns 533.6 billion cubic meters of proven gas reserves. In addition, Ordos has also rich reserves of natural soda, salt, Glauber’s salt, gypsum, limestone, sand clay, and purple clay. Plentiful resources enable Ordos to become one of the most important bases for energy production. Moreover, owing to its long history and distinct regional characteristics, Ordos owns ample tourism resources, for example, the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan where the hero slept his permanent sleep, the “Yinken” ringing sand, the world Treasure Park and the oasis Engebei Tourist Attraction. There are 35 scenic spots throughout the city, including Zhungeerzhao, Seven Starts Lake, ancient Great Wall, Qin Straight Ways, Dunhuang Aersai Grottoes in Grassland, and Grand Canyon of Yellow River, among which five are 4A level and six are 3A level.

With the deepening of Western Development, Ordos has taken advantage of its resources and followed the scientific rule of development, thus raised the conceptions of “Interacted development of First, Second and Third Industry” and “centralized development”. In recent years, Ordos has proposed and administered “nine huge projects”.

For the development of the First Industry, Ordos emphasizes “Green city and Husbandry Growth”, taking the lead to promote grazing land rest, grazing prohibition and grazing rotation and contributing relentless effort to reduce the burden of farmers and herdsmen, transfer them to better-conditioned areas, and help them to attain an affluent living. Ordos government is committed to create a win-win relation between economic growth and environmental protection, trying to break the malicious circle of “Deterioration of ecological environment – Governance -- Deterioration of ecological environment”. For the Second Industry, Ordos highlights the construction of national energy industrial bases, taking the road of “high starting point, high-tech, high efficiency, highly developed industrial chain, high added value, and high energy saving and environment protection”, and striving for establish large-scale coal production, energy generation, chemical industry and recycling. At present, the new energy industrial base has taken its initial scale. For the Third Industry, Ordos has carried out three projects concerning shaping of the city image, elevation of citizen quality and construction of ethnic culture, paying great effort to promoting the development of tourism and shaping a new urban landscape including large-scale tourism, diverse culture and convenient transportation. In recent years, Ordos carried forward the spirit of “Transcending oneself, Promoting civilization and Achieving excellence”, pursued the radiation effect which “Dongsheng – Kangbashi -- Azhen” as the core can exert upon the regions along the river and the borderline in their urbanization process, so as to build a city with more vitality, strength, charm and harmony and enhance the development of politics, economy, culture and social welfare. In 2007, Ordos’ GDP hit 115.09 billion yuan, up 25.8 percent over the last year and ranking the second in the whole autonomous region; its per capita GDP reached 10,000 U.S. dollars, ranking the first in the region; its fiscal revenue 20.08 billion yuan, an increase of 37.7%, also ranking the first in the region. Per capital disposable income of urban residents amounted to 16,226 yuan; per capita net income of farmers and herdsmen 6,123 yuan. Fixed assets investment totaled 88.6 billion yuan, a rise of 39.8%. According to the evaluation results published by the National Bureau of Statistics, the overall economic strength of Ordos is rated 28th among the hundred economically powerful cities. These figures not only proves the “sound and fast” development of Ordos, but also marks that Ordos has crossed a new threshold in its economic growth and social advancement.本回答被提问者和网友采纳

Ordos is one of the twelve major subdivisions of Inner Mongolia, China. It lies within the Ordos Loop of the Yellow River. Although mainly rural, Ordos is administered as a prefecture-level city.
The most populous municipality is Dongsheng which had a population of 582,544 inhabitants as of the 2010 census. Another urban area is the conglomeration of Kangbashi District and the township of Altan Xire. The district is on the north side of the Wulan Mulun River, a tributary of the Yellow River while the township on the south side of the same river is the county seat of Ejin Horo Banner.
Ordos is known for its lavish government projects, including the new Kangbashi District, a large District with abundant infrastructure, seldom used by residents and frequently described as a "ghost city".But this status has been improving and, as of 2016, Kangbashi had become more populated, with a daytime population of 100,000 and around one-third apartments occupied. It hosted the 2012 Miss World Final.
In 2011, a 49,400-square-meter museum, entitled Ordos Museum (鄂尔多斯博物馆), was opened in Kangbashi. The museum, designed by China-based architectural practice MAD Studio, focuses upon the history of the Ordos area, as well as on the culture and traditions of Inner Mongolia.
Travel within Ordos City is primarily made by car or bus, using the city's network roads. Two tolled expressways, the G18 Rongcheng–Wuhai Expressway and the G65 Baotou–Maoming Expressway, provide connections with other towns and cities including Dongsheng. There are no direct rail lines to the city. The closest is the Baoshen Line in Dongsheng.Ordos Airport is located in Ejin Horo Banner.
