Then I saw a man sitting at a corner table near the door keeping looking in my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly didn’t know him, for I never forgot a 12 .
Then I saw a man sitting at a corner table near the door keeping (keep) looking in my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly didn’t know him, for I never forgot (forget) a 12 .

The man had a newspaper 13 in front of him.(,) But (but) I could see that he was keeping an 14 on me.

He became even (more) puzzled as 16 went on.
