看到一句话，这是对过去的虚拟语气，那为什么不是 if i had had an axe? 而且我不只一次看到这样的描述了。if i had a chance, i would have fired you very much soon.

if i'd had an axe 和 if i had an axe 的区别，有些人可能会说这是口语中为了简便这样说，但是这听上去其实是两个意思，一个是当时没有，一个不光是当时没有，就是从来都没有过。这在中文里解释，很难解释得清楚，两句话都是 如果我有斧头，暗示出我没有，但是第一个是 你可能并不是真的没有斧头，你只是当时没有。。还是英语解释好一些。
"if i had" refers to a general hypothetical situation that holds over a long period of time, from past to present, presumably future.
"if i had an axe" is about that if i were the possessor of an axe, in fact, i didn't actually have one at that time, now still.
"if i'd had" just refers to a really particular hypothetical situation in the past.
"if i'd had an axe" could make others think that i might own an axe i just did not hold it at that point of time, so i was not capable of cutting his head.
"if i had a chance"
which implies the speaker has never gotta chance by now, even in future.
"if i'd had a chance"
the speaker didn't have a chance at a particular point of time, discussing a very specific situation.
this distinction can be applied to all kinds of situations, but i don't sure say u can write in this way in your tests, unless your english teacher is not some kinda known grammar rule stickler, but in daily spoken, it is perfectly valid.
