我们一般把than 理解为连词，作比较，但是它有代词的作用，尤其是than 引导定语从句时，在定语从句中可以作主语，宾语，表语能成分。
例句中作的是主语。

作宾语如下，he didi more tings than you required
作表语如下，he is more than he is required=he is more than required通常在此种情况下可以省略主语和谓语，

也就是说这个than 有两个身份 一个是与more 连接起比较作用，另一个是代词的作用。
这个用法和as 很像
如 he is such a man as you talked about作宾语
he is such a man as is talked =he is such a man as talked作主语
he is such a man as he is thought to be 作表语
