英语高手来，语法问题！！

Question

我爸爸的一个朋友:a friend of my father's
那只猫的名字:the name of that cat
为什么不能说：
my father's friend
that cat's name
这里面有什么语法呢？

1）my father's friend
that cat's name 是名词属格

2）a friend of my father's
the name of that cat 是of词组

这2种用法都可以表示所有关系：
the trunk of an elephant=an elephant's trunk

但是，of-词组在用法上又不能和名词属格完全等同起来，比如当名词属格用来表示事务类别或属性时，就不可用of-词组来替代：
儿童画报children's pictorial

还有在某些习语中也只能用名词属格，而不能用of-词组：
at one's wits end智穷力竭

但在另一些语境中，比如名词带有较长的后置修饰语的情况下就只能用of-词组，不用名词属格：
the opinion of the chairman appionted a month ago

如果名词词组是由“定冠词+形容词”构成，或者-of词组是表示同位关系，那么也只能用of-词组：
the city of Roma
the income of the rich

我爸爸的一个朋友:a friend of my father's

主要因为我爸爸的一个朋友是活的生物，而它是固定的例如：a sister of my mother's 而冇是非生物固定的用法就是the name of cat ,又如the food of this dog

my father's 其实是指代 my father's friends。这个你应该知道吧。

a friend of my father's 和my father's friend 的区别就在于
前者是说我父亲众多朋友中的一个
后者则是说我父亲的朋友

the name of that cat 只能这么用
因为非人的一般是不用 's 的。本回答被提问者采纳

可以这么说啊，只是你提的用法让人觉得念起来不是很舒服，毕竟这是一种语言，中文也是这样，一种意思可以有很多种说法，但要力求表达简洁明了
那种我爸爸的一个朋友:a friend of my father's
那只猫的名字:the name of that cat
是惯用的～

xx's 表示后面那个东西是属于前面那个东西的

那只猫的名字:the name of that cat

这句也可以说the cat's name
