我国数控机床产量持续高速增长，数控机床在加工精度、自动化程度、生产效率、劳动强度等诸方面都有普通机床无法比拟的优势，但购买新的数控机床特别是大型数控机床费用很高，常使许多用户望而怯步，特别是像我国这样的发展中国家资金有限。几年来数控机床升级改造的经验告诉我们，对老机床实施数控化改造，不仅实用性能良好、周期短，而且可以节约大量资金。被改造的机床越大，所节约的资金也越多。
本文主要论述了普通车床改造的项目、步骤和需要进行改造的主要部件。重点讨论了CA6140机床的主传动系统的改造。
