a common question asked by tourist visiting Beijing is where can i see Hotongs, literally meaning narrow streets or back alleys.
Beijing's HuTongs originated during the yuan dynasty, and there were over 6000 hutongs at their peak.
the earliest HuTongs in history were found along the stretch between ChaoYang gate inner street and east four, with a neat layout and almost equal distance among each other.
hutongs running from south to north are relatively wide, serving as streets, such as the north and south alleys between the BeiJing Train Station and Chaoyang gate Inner Street.they are also called horse roads for being once used by horses in the past,
and those running through from west to east are narrower, with siheyuan or traditional courtyard residencies, on either side
how many HuTongs are there in Beijing?
historical documents show that they were numbering in thousands in the Ming dynasty, with over 900 in the interior city and 300-plus in the exterior
by the Qing dynasty, they had increased to over 1800 and to above 1900 in the era of the nationalist government
at the beginning of New China, statistics show that there are over 2550
Today there are more than 4000 in Beijing
what the modern Beijing interest people about is not its rows of skyscrapers and sophisticated transport but its winding HuTongs, and warm and beautiful SiHeYuans
so it's fairly true for people to say that the real culture of Beijing is the culture of hutong and the culture of courtyard

when went to Beijing, tourists frequently asked a question---where are Beijing's hutongs. Beijing's Hutong was originated from Yuan Dynasty.More than 6,000 hutongs is alive at that time, and the earliest hutong is Chaoyangmennei Street and an alley between East 4 which are very neat. The distance between the alleys is roughly the same. The general north-south street is relatively wide, such as the ane from Beijing Railway Station to the south side street Chaoyangmennei Street and North street, mainly due to carriages often cross them which was also called the road in the past. The generally east-west alley is relatively narrow, in order to leave the main alley to walk through and Hutong courtyard is on either side generally.
How many are Beijing Hutongs ? According to historical records, in the Ming Dynasty there are as many as several thousand, of which more than 900 are among inner city, while among outer city are more than 300.(这里我用到装 强调一下 不喜欢可以换回来 主宾调换就行了) The number of Hutongs was more than 1800 in Qing Dynasty ,while more than 1900 then in Ming guo(民国不知道怎么翻译 不好意思呵~).when new China was found , early statistics shown more than 2550 hutongs have come into being. Until now, about 4,000 hutongs is still in Beijing City.
when someone steps into the modern city of Beijing, it is often not rows of tall buildings that interested us ,and not the wide streets extending in all directions, but the small alley that twists and turns deep, warm and beautiful courtyard.
Therefore, the ancient capital culture was called as "Hutong culture" and "courtyard culture" .It can not be acceptable any more!
