answer(to)the letter，answer(to)the question，answer(for)the purpose等常用格式中，习惯将to或for等介词省略掉，但是注意reply to the letter中的to不可以省略；

answer有时指“答复……的内容”。
I have your letter, but as I am very busy, I cannot answer it at present.
句中的主语已经在回复信了，但还说没有办法answer。
有时，answer指“报告收到”，reply指“答复……的内容”。
I answered your letter by sending a postcard last Monday and have since been waiting for time to reply to it.
