Most women in Chana-the educated and illiterate,the urban and rural,the young and old work to earn an income in addition to maintaining their roles as housewives and mothers.Their reputation for economic indepence,self-reliance,and work is well known and well deserved.
Nine out of ten women aged fifteen years and over are mae-ried.Women say they would like to have six or more children,and in fact an average of seven children is born to every women.In short,the normal lift pattern for most Ghanaian women is to com-bine an active role in the economy with an active role as wife and mother of a large family.
/Mrs.Smith had a small garden,and in spring she planted some vegetables in it.She looked very nice.
One evening Mrs.Smith looked at her vegetablesm and said,"Tomorrow I am going to pick them,and then we can eat them."
But early the next morning ,her daughter ran into the kitchen and shouted,"Come quickly!Our neighbour's ducks are in the garden and they are eating our vegetables.
Mrs.Smith ran out,but it was to late!All the vegetables were finished!Mrs.Smith cried and made her neighbour very sorry,but that was the end of the vegetablrs.
Then several days before Christmas,the neighbour gave Mrs.Brown a parcel.In it was a beautiful,fat duck,and on it was a piece of paper with the words:
"Enjoy your vegetables!"
