元旦：
相传元旦一词来自我国最早的皇帝之一颛顼，他规定以农历正月为元，初一为旦，直到西汉武帝时重新制定历法，并规定每年正月初一为元旦，从此历代不改。而现在的元旦则是辛亥革命成功后，决定采用国际通行的公历将农历元旦改为春节，而公历的1月1日为元旦。
说到过年放爆竹，现在很多人都知道，这是为了吓走一种名为“年”的怪兽。实际上如果深究起来，关于这个“年兽”的形象，其实有很多不同的说法。以汉代来说，人们在元旦这天一起床就要在院子里燃放爆竹，是为了吓走一种叫做“山臊”的鬼怪。
