定语是对名词或代词进行修饰或限定。例如，a beautiful girl中，girl是被修饰的。a表示数量，把数量限定在一个，而不是多个；beautiful修饰了girl，表明女孩是漂亮的，也限定在漂亮，排除了丑。
能做定语的成分
1、形容词：
a red coat一个红外套
a long river一条长河
2、介词短语：
The boy in white is my best friend.
穿白衣服的男孩是我最好的朋友。
The pen in the pencil box is not mine.
在铅笔盒里的钢笔不是我的。
3、名词／代词：
a 10-year-old boy 10岁小孩
His sister他的妹妹
4、副词：
Read the paragraph and answer the questions below.

The most beautiful girl here is my girlfriend.
这里最漂亮的女孩是我的女朋友。
5、分词：
现在分词和过去分词都可以作定语。
The smiling baby in the picture is me.
照片中笑着的那个娃娃是我。
The boy left behind is Li Ming.
被甩在后面的那个小孩是李明。
6、不定式：
I have nothing to say.我没有什么要说的了。
to say修饰nothing。
定语的次序
数量（a, two），包括序数词，甚至比较级，最高级。
评价性的（beautiful, ugly）。
概括性的（big, small, tall, short, fat, thin）。
年龄（10-year-old)。
颜色（red, blue)。
来源（Chinese, American)。
