所谓连词，就是要连接两个平行成分。 parents always have much more expectation than I can do. 这个句子中，than做连词，就是连接两个句子： （parents always have much more expectation） than （I can do）.
楼主想改成parents always have much more expectation than what I can do.我觉得是可以的，而且这时候than的确变成介词：“与……相比”，因为than的前后已经不再是平行句式，而仅仅是more expectation与what I can do在相比。
再看以下例子：
That building is more magnificent than I thought. 那座大楼比我想象的更宏伟。 This multi-storied building is more grand than what I imagine. 这座大楼比我想象的更宏伟。
