请问大家我对下面这几组表示“大量的”短语总结理解正确吗？请大家指点说明谢谢了。
sums of money “多笔的钱”
sums of money have been lost.
多笔的钱被弄丢了。（虽然sums of 修饰的是不可数名词money, 但由于前面的量词为复数sums，所以后面的谓语动词要用复数。）
Large sums of money were invested in commodities that were not used.
翻译: 有大量资金投在用品方面，而又未加使用。
a sum of....后面跟不可数名词（常跟money）表示“一大笔钱”
a sum of money has been lost.
有一大笔钱被丢了。
the sum of money 表示的“特指这笔钱”
the sum of money has been lost.
翻译成：“这笔钱”被丢了。
注：虽然两句话的意思不一样，但他们的谓语动词都需要用单数。
但是下面这两组就要注意了： a number of 和 the number of
a number of + 加可数名词复数 表示“很多...” （作主语时谓语动词要用“复数”核心名词为后面的复数名词）
a number of people are here.
大量的人聚集在了这里。
the number of +加可数名词复数 表示“....的数量”（作主语时谓语动词要用“单数”核心名词为前面的the number）
The number of the students in my class is 40.
我们班学生的数量是40名。
表示”多”这层概念还可以用：a deal of
a deal of + 不可数名词 表示“大量的”中间常加“great , huge, large”等来加强程度。但与a sum of....+不可数名词相比时，a deal of... 可修饰的内容基本不限，而a sum of常用来修饰“金钱”。（但二者作主语时谓语动词都需要用“单数”形式
We have a great deal of work to do.
我们有很多工作要去做。
Factories cause a great deal of pollution.
工厂产生了大量污染。
总结得很好，完全正确。但是最后两个例句举得不合适，它们并非在句子中作主语。因为上面说的是：二者作主语时谓语动词都需要用＂单数＂形式。可否改为：
A great deal of bitter experience has taught him how to lose gracefully. （大量痛苦的经历已经教会他如何体面地认输。）
