他还曾坚决抛弃英国政府所授予的爵位和特权。印度人民尊崇他、热爱他，称他为诗圣、印度的良心和印度的灵魂。
20世纪30年代，当德、意、日法西斯发动侵略战争的时候，泰戈尔拍案而起，向全世界大声疾呼：“在我离去之前，我向每一个家庭呼吁——准备战斗吧，反抗那披着人皮的野兽。是针对当时印度社会现实予以无情揭露和鞭笞的著名戏剧剧本。
