Abstract: Movie is art of vision and acoustics, among them the power of image is irresistible. As a crucial element for movie construction, color is extensively used in Director Zhang Yimou's movies. Color is kind of expression rather than representation, it's part of description for people's psychology and emotion. Moreover, color can facilitate evolvement of the whole story and broaden the use of camera-language. In this article, we analyzed the use of color in Zhang Yimou's movie and summarized up his artistic characteristics.

Abstract: Movie is kind of audiovisual art, with irresistible power of image.
Color, as the key element in visual designing, has been most beautifully describing in Zhang Yimo’s film.
According to the character’s different physical descriptions, emotions and so on, color, as the key element of screenplay, it will boost the development of storyline and broden the camera language. Therefore, it is not only reproduced but also presented.
The paper is analyzed the color application and summarized the corresponding artistic characteristics and the principle of color application in Zhang Yimo’s film.

Digest: Film is the art of listening and watching, and the power of image is rresistible. As the important method of film profiling, color is made the most of in Zhang Yimou’s films. Color is not only is the method of recurring but also of expression. It also takes part in the portraying and expressingof the feelings of characters. As the element of scenario, color can drive forward the plot developing. It expand the space of camera language. The thesis summerizes the rule of color usage in Zhang Yimou’s film through analysing the color usage in Zhang’s film.
