After i had had lunch at a village pub, i looked for my bag.As i was looking for it, the landlord came in.
"Did you have a good meal?"he asked.
"Yes,thank you,"I answered,"but i cannot pay the bill. I haven't got my bag."
The landlord smiled and immediately went out. In a few minutes he returned with my bag and gave it back to me.
"I'm sorry,"he said."My dog had taken it into the garden.He often does this"

在这个短文中，我对"my dog had taken it into the garden"这句的用过去完成时很不明白，和据上下文语境我认为应该用现在完成时，因为是直接引语, 所以根据当时的时间关系真不理解为什么不用has而用had.

请高人指点

你看看第一句啊，那里是looked for my bag哦，是作为参照点的过去式，那么dog把包拖到花园是之前的动作，所以必须得用过去完成时had done啊。并不是说话的主人在说话之前干了啥事哦。追问

那为何不用一般过去时？
