Pokémon, known in Japanese as ポケットモンスター, is the Japanese translation of the English term "Pocket Monster." The English name Pokémon originates from the Japanese Romanization of the term Poketto Monsutā (日文原名:ポケットモンスター). The official Pokémon games produced by Game Freak can be divided into several generations. These generations are generally sorted by the year of release. When the main series introduces new Pokémon, characters, and gameplay, the game is considered to mark the beginning of a new era in the series. Main series games and spin-offs, along with anime, manga, and trading card games, are upgraded at the start of a new generation.
The gameplay of the Pokémon series involves choosing one of three different initial Pokémon to embark on an adventure with. This gameplay has been present in the majority of Pokémon games from the Game Boy titles Pokémon Red and Green to the Nintendo 3DS games Pokémon Sun and Moon. Players can choose a Grass-type, Fire-type, or Water-type Pokémon, with the types varying by region. Another enduring aspect of the gameplay is that the player's rival will always choose a Pokémon that is super effective against the player's initial choice. For instance, if the player selects a Fire-type Charmander, the rival will choose a Water-type Blastoise. Despite this, the first battle between them is unaffected since the rival's choice can only use Normal-type moves and cannot exploit type weaknesses. An exception occurs in Pokémon Pikachu, where the rival chooses a Normal-type Eevee.
